What is BaZi? A guide to the Four Pillars
BaZi is a Chinese tradition that represents a birth date and time as four pairs of characters: the year, month, day and hour pillars. The name means “eight characters.” ChanFlow uses this symbolic language to explore character and lived experience.
What are the Four Pillars?
Each pillar contains a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch. The stems and branches belong to a repeating calendar cycle. The resulting eight characters form the starting chart; they are not eight personality labels.
A BaZi month follows solar-term boundaries, rather than simply starting on the first day of a Gregorian month. Near a calendar boundary, the time and place of birth can matter. ChanFlow calculates the chart in code before an AI model reads it.
Where does the Day Master fit?
The Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of the day pillar. It gives the chart a reference point: the other characters are read in relation to it. There are ten possible Day Masters, grouped into Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water.
A Day Master alone does not describe a whole person. ChanFlow’s free type card gives an introduction; the full report reads the wider chart. Two people with the same Day Master can have very different charts.
Is BaZi the same as the Chinese zodiac?
The familiar zodiac animal corresponds to the year branch. BaZi includes the year, month, day and hour, so sharing a zodiac animal does not mean sharing an eight-character chart. Western astrology uses a different framework based on celestial positions.
What does ChanFlow do with a chart?
The character report reads personal patterns, the years behind you and the theme of your current season. BaZi is the main language, with Western astrology and Zi Wei Dou Shu used where the available birth details support them. Missing details are identified rather than filled in with guesses.
This is an interpretation within a cultural tradition, not a scientifically validated personality test. Calculating a chart consistently does not establish that its interpretation is objectively true. You can read the sample before deciding whether this kind of reflection is useful to you.
